Simple Things

As many of you know, we have inherited several things recently from my MIL. Mr. CH is an only child, so it has fallen on me to do most of the sorting through.  The good news and the bad news is that I am doing it all myself.  I thought I was done, and Mr. CH came over to the house for a last run through before the estate sale person came.  I decided to take another look in the garage and was rewarded with a few morsels.  These simple everyday objects are not the kind of things that would have been displayed when they were new.  They had been purchased for their functionality.  They were common.  But now, they have a new appeal, a new life.  I found several rolls of old string and twine.  I thought they looked at home in this tureen with an equally old folding yard stick.

This old washboard appealed to me too.

Would you use this for your silk items?  I don't think so!  They put this in their suit case?  Wow, life has changed.  I also found this aluminum (I guess) little cocker spaniel.  Looks like maybe it was originally for a mailbox.  Mr. CH didn't remember ever seeing it, so I don't know where it came from.

The cast iron rooster is from Round Top.

In my MIL's house, the master bedroom had a laundry shoot that had been converted to a cabinet at one time.  I was able to open the door of the cabinet, but not the upper hatch for the shoot.  Mr. CH was finally able to pry it open for me one day, and I found lots, and lots of plastic flowers (I didn't keep those) and these cute little chickens.  I am referring to the two little ones in front. The two chickens in back are from a consignment store.

Thanks for all of the well-wishes; I am feeling ever so much better. But now my fifteen-year-old says her throat hurts, so looks like I'll be taking another trip to the doctor tomorrow.  She is performing in a play at school, so I had to work in an appointment between performances.  Ah yes, the show must go on, I suppose.

When we moved mama into assisted living 2 years ago it took my sister and I 7 weekends to clear out/clean out and then we had an estate sale. Everyone took what they wanted but I kept things that were simple and sweet that reminded me of my mama. In her "ironing room" she kept a little ruby colored glass pitcher she used to put water into her iron with...hubby found it and brought it home and I now use it in my laundry room.

I love your folding ruler and spools of twine/thread...simple things, yet so meaningful.

Thanks for sharing (and I hope your household gets well soon)!

And the little aluminum dog is sitting on the sweetest selection of books. Oh so hard to go through a lifetime of living.

I dread the day I have to do this. Not only will I be an emotional wreck because I love my mother and MIL dearly, but because they both have so much stuff!!!

Hope the sickness has left your house...

Glad to hear you're feeling better! Sorry to hear your daughter's not. I love the wash board...though just for looks! I cherish those things left by my grandparents.

Great finds! I love the cocker spaniel - looks like my Sullivan! Glad you're feeling better - hope your child is better soon too. My little grandbaby has what sounds like the same thing so she'll probably be off to the pediatrician tomorrow. Have a good one! Hugs, Leena

What wonderful treasures from the past. My dad has a folding yardstick like that one. Always takes me back to simpler times.

Sorry the kiddo is sick. The Man is just recovering. Fingers crossed that I'm not next.

I love your keepsakes! I'm glad you decided to keep them. It's hard to decide when you have so much to go through. I found that true in going through my mother's things. I wanted to keep everything!
